Burst pipe repair: what to do before a plumber arrives
A sensible first-response checklist when a pipe bursts, water is escaping or a wall or ceiling starts to get wet.
A burst pipe can cause rapid water damage. If it is safe to do so, close the relevant isolation valve or main stopcock and keep people away from water near electrical equipment.
Move loose items away from the affected area and avoid opening ceilings, walls or fittings yourself. A few photographs and the location of the visible water can be useful when explaining the problem to the plumbing team.
When you call, describe whether the water has stopped after isolation, the room or outdoor area affected, and whether a ceiling, electrical fitting or neighbouring property may be at risk.
