Drain care
A Cape Town household guide to avoiding blocked drains
Small habits around food waste, oils and bathroom products can reduce avoidable drainage problems at home.
Many household blockages begin with materials that should never enter a drain or toilet. Put wipes, sanitary items, cooking fats, food scraps and other rubbish in the bin instead.
The City of Cape Town advises residents to keep fats, oils and grease out of drains, and to use suitable covers to stop sand, leaves and other debris from entering drainage systems.
If a drain is slow, avoid repeatedly using harsh chemicals. Instead, note which fixtures are affected and whether water is backing up, then arrange professional assessment if the problem persists or becomes urgent.
